Since the Enemies of the State

Coming Off the Heels of Great News: Reflecting on the Enemies of the State DC Bash at the Libertarian Convention

We are coming off the heels of great news. Ross Ulbricht has been granted a full pardon. As we celebrate this monumental victory, we reflect on the "Enemies of the State" party, which honored him and many others who have stood up for government transparency, individual liberty, and financial freedom.

In June 2024, libertarians and advocates of freedom gathered in Washington, DC, for a night of camaraderie, remembrance, and resolve. The "Enemies of the State DC Bash," held as part of the libertarian convention, was more than just a party—it was a celebration of resilience and a bold statement against government overreach. This unforgettable event, attended by over 600 passionate individuals, was a tribute to those who have dedicated their lives to the causes of government transparency, individual liberty, and financial freedom. In just three weeks, organizers led by Dan O’Neill and the Central NJ Libertarians raised over $20,000 to fund this event, highlighting the incredible support and enthusiasm for the cause.

The term "Enemies of the State" was a provocative nod to those who have been unfairly targeted for exposing government corruption, standing up to authoritarian policies, or advocating for fundamental freedoms. Among those honored were Julian Assange, Edward Snowden, Ross Ulbricht, Roger Ver, and Ian Freeman. These names have become synonymous with courage in the face of systemic oppression, and the evening was dedicated to amplifying their stories and rallying support for their causes.

Powerful Testimonies

The event featured stirring speeches from liberty advocates and the families of the incarcerated, each sharing their heartfelt testimonies about why these so-called "Enemies of the State" deserve to be recognized as heroes:

  • Bonnie Freeman, wife of Ian Freeman, spoke passionately about Ian’s enduring fight for financial privacy and liberty. Her heartfelt words reminded the audience of the importance of standing up for the fundamental rights that are often taken for granted.

  • Naomi Brockwell, representing Edward Snowden, highlighted the importance of whistleblowing in an era of mass surveillance. She shared insights into how Snowden’s revelations have forever changed the global conversation on privacy and the role of the state.

  • James Babb, an outspoken advocate for Ross Ulbricht and member of the Punk Rock Libertarian Podcast, emphasized the injustice of Ross’s life sentence and the broader implications for freedom in the digital age. He passionately argued for the need to protect innovation and the pioneers of digital progress.

  • Gabriel Shipton, brother of Julian Assange, shared an intimate perspective on Julian’s plight and the toll it has taken on their family. His speech provided a deeply personal reminder of the human cost of standing up to government secrecy.

  • Aaron Day spoke about how Roger Ver was instrumental in getting the word out about Ian Freeman during Ian's trial, only to find himself arrested a few months later. His words were a poignant reminder of the ripple effects of activism and the price many pay for their principles.

  • Doug Tuman, representing Roger Ver, delivered a compelling account of Roger’s advocacy for cryptocurrency as a tool for empowerment and liberation. He underscored how decentralized finance can be a powerful antidote to government overreach.

  • Jeremy Kauffman, creator of LBRY.com, gave a powerful speech about how these individuals should be celebrated as heroes. He emphasized the vital role of empowering others with knowledge about the government’s influence on our lives. Jeremy’s own company, LBRY.com, was unjustly shut down, further highlighting the challenges faced by those who push back against an overreaching government.

Each speaker underscored the humanity and principles of these individuals, challenging the narrative that has painted them as criminals rather than champions of liberty. Their words served as a rallying cry for all who believe in the power of truth and the resilience of the human spirit.

Inspiration and Entertainment

In addition to the testimonials, the event featured an unforgettable speech from Ian Smith, owner of Attila’s Gym and a staunch opponent of COVID lockdowns. Ian’s words resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring everyone to stand firm in their beliefs, even in the face of overwhelming opposition. His story of resistance against authoritarian mandates served as a powerful example of what it means to live by one’s convictions.

The night also included incredible performances by liberty-minded entertainers who kept the energy high and the message clear:

  • DJ Ben Weir got the crowd moving with his upbeat tracks, setting the tone for an evening of celebration and resolve.

  • Freenauts and Tatiana Moroz delivered performances that blended music with powerful messages of freedom. Their lyrics and melodies reminded everyone of the strength found in unity and shared purpose.

  • Jordan Page, the headliner, unveiled his new song, “Free Ross,” a stirring anthem that captured the essence of the evening and left the audience in awe. His performance was a highlight of the night, uniting everyone in a shared sense of hope and determination.

The event was skillfully emceed by Mark Edge, a prominent Free Stater, who kept the night flowing seamlessly and full of purpose. His commentary and insights tied the evening together, reminding attendees of the broader mission behind the celebration.

Progress Since the Bash

Much has happened since that memorable night in June 2024. In a major victory for liberty advocates, Julian Assange has been freed, though not pardoned. And just days ago, Ross Ulbricht received a full pardon from President Trump—a monumental triumph that exceeded the initial hope for a sentence commutation. These milestones remind us that persistence pays off and that the tide is slowly turning in favor of justice.

However, the fight is far from over. Ian Freeman remains behind bars, serving an eight-year sentence, and Roger Ver faces the looming threat of a staggering 107-year sentence. These men need our unwavering support as they continue to endure their battles for justice and freedom. Their stories are a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring fight for liberty in the face of oppression.

How You Can Help

The momentum is on our side, but we must keep pushing forward. You can take action today by:

  • Supporting Roger Ver’s petition for justice. Sign and share it here: https://chng.it/hbQccbWg86.

  • Supporting Ian Freeman by signing his petition at www.freeiannow.org and spreading awareness about his case.

  • If you can be in the Boston area on February 5th, stop by the courthouse and show your support at Ian’s appeal hearing.

The success of this movement depends on all of us. By coming together and taking action, we can challenge injustice and ensure that the voices of those who fight for liberty are heard loud and clear.

As we reflect on the Enemies of the State DC Bash, let us remember the power of unity, the importance of standing up for our principles, and the enduring spirit of liberty. Together, we can continue to challenge injustice and honor the legacies of those who have sacrificed so much in the pursuit of truth and freedom. The fight is far from over, but with each step forward, we edge closer to a future where justice prevails and liberty thrives.
